When Is An Eyelid Lift Medically Necessary?

Blepharoplasty (frequently referred to as an eyelid lift) is a popular procedure to resolve drooping upper or lower eyelids. While the procedure is designed to restore a youthful appearance, there are also potential medical benefits to improve vision and eye function.

The problem of drooping upper eyelids may occur for several different reasons, which may require different treatments. The most common issues are the downward displacement of the eyelid margin (blepharoptosis) and excess eyelid skin (dermatochalasis).

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess skin and fat from the lower or upper eyelids. A common question board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Landis, hears regularly: when is eyelid surgery medically necessary?

Medical Reasons for Upper Eyelids Drooping

The most critical factor in determining the medical necessity of blepharoplasty is what the patient is experiencing. Typically, the patient will know their eyelids are causing problems with vision when they are prevented from doing activities like driving and reading or experiencing headaches or eye strain.

In addition to these lifestyle issues, there are objective findings that your surgeon will discover through physical exam and studies,  like visual field testing, photographs, and eyelid measurements. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, indicators for medical need for an eyelid lift include:

  • The patient notices functional impairment
  • The distance between the center of the pupil and the edge of the eyelid (margin reflex distance) is less than 2mm
  • Superior visual field loss
  • Impaired reading or other near-sighted activities
  • Eye discomfort or strain
  • Chin-up head tilt
  • Optical interference because of hooded upper eyelids

Keep in mind – these are not rules but suggested guidelines. The determination for a functional diagnosis for surgery is necessary for the patient’s insurance coverage. Each health care company has its own guidelines, which may be different than these indicators. A consultation with Dr. Landis can help you to determine whether you may qualify for medical blepharoplasty.

Cosmetic Improvement

Blepharoplasty not only corrects eyelids from drooping over your eyes and impairing your vision but has the added benefit of making you look more alert and younger. One of the problems with aging eyelids is that when they become hooded, puffy, and hide your eyes, they can give you the appearance of being tired and worn. After an eyelid lift, patients are excited to look younger and more focused. It can affect not only their appearance but how others see them at home and on the job.

When Should You See a Doctor?

If you feel your upper eyelids are causing significant cosmetic issues or functional problems, you may be a suitable candidate for blepharoplasty. Come in for a professional assessment to explore your options.

Pairing Surgical Body Contouring Procedures: Which Go Together

When considering body contouring, there are multiple procedures which can work together to ensure you get the results you want. Whether you need help in the tummy, breasts, buttocks, or thighs, there is a solution for you, and at times more than one.

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. George Landis offers procedures designed to eliminate excess fat and skin for optimal results. For many patients, he can pair two or more together to help you achieve your aesthetic goals in one surgical session.  When he consults with patients about combining these surgical procedures, more times than not the most popular cosmetic surgery is part of the conversation.

This popular aesthetic procedure has been around for several decades and has proven to be a safe, effective solution for pesky fat bulges that seem resistant to diet and exercise. By surgical standards, it’s minimally invasive and has a short recovery. Removing excess fat is essential to eliminate unwanted fat cells and improve body outline. Pairing liposuction with other body contouring procedures is a popular way to enhance results. Dr. Landis often combines liposuction with breast surgery, a lower facelift, fat transfer, and tummy tuck, to name a few.

Mommy Makeover

By definition, a mommy makeover is a combination of body contouring procedures designed to restore pre-pregnancy outlines to mothers dealing with the after-effects of bearing children and breastfeeding. The operation deals mainly with the breast and belly areas but can also include the thighs, hips, and love handles.

Breast surgeries like breast augmentation, breast lift, or breast reduction are combined with a tummy tuck to rejuvenate a youthful figure and improve skin tone.

The Breasts

During the aging process, especially after bearing children, breasts may lose volume and elevation. Breast augmentation with implants will improve firmness, size, and shape. With a wide selection of breast implants to choose from, the patient may either restore the breasts she had before motherhood or attain the breasts she has wanted since puberty.

A breast lift does what its name implies; it rises breast elevation to their youthful perkiness. Combining breast augmentation with a breast lift will give the patient the best of both worlds; size and shape enhancements with that upward turn enjoyed when she was younger.

After Weight Loss

When a man or woman loses a massive amount of weight, they are on their way to a healthier life. Unfortunately, when losing a lot of weight, excess skin may cause a problem. Body contouring procedures are an effectual remedy to eliminate excess skin to improve the shape and comfort of the patient. By removing sagging skin, clothes fit better without irritation and discomfort, and the body looks sleeker, slimmer, and taut, effectively completing its transformation.

What 2018 Taught Us About Plastic Surgery

The first mentions of plastic surgery in human history date back thousands of years to Ancient Egypt and India, hundreds of years BC. Though it is thousands of years old, plastic surgery is a field in which growth and innovation are celebrated, and the best plastic surgeons never stop learning new techniques and procedures. Here is what we learned this past year about plastic surgery:

Seeking Out Highly-Qualified and Board-Certified Surgeons is Critical for Your Safety and Surgical Outcomes.

In 2018, we learned that the risk for death for gluteal fat grafting (also known as the Brazilian Butt Lift) was much higher than for other cosmetic surgeries.  The American Society of Plastic Surgeons released a warning about this procedure that revealed a death rate of about 1 in 3,000 patients. While cosmetic surgeries are considered to be relatively safe for healthy patients, there is some risk, and more for some procedures.

Because of the risk associated with this and other cosmetic surgeries, it is critical that you seek out a physician who is committed to patient safety and has a great deal of experience. Not all surgeons are created equal! Find a board-certified surgeon to do your surgery, as this ensures that he has completed a rigorous residency training program and has been able to demonstrate mastery of surgical techniques through extensive testing.  Physicians who are not board-certified have not demonstrated this level of mastery; why trust your beauty (and your life) to a lesser qualified surgeon?

Dr. Landis upholds the highest ethical and patient safety standards for all of his procedures, and he has decades of experience that will ensure you get the best care and outcomes for your plastic surgery.

Plastic Surgery isn’t Just for Women.

Though plastic surgery has traditionally been sought out by women who want to enhance their appearance, more and more men are turning to cosmetic surgeons for help in aesthetic enhancement and to boost their self-confidence. Just in the past year, the number of men seeking procedures such as male breast reduction, abdominoplasty, or liposuction has increased significantly. Dr. Landis has been performing plastic surgery on men for more than two decades, and he understands the physical and emotional factors at play for men.

Weight Loss Isn’t Enough to Give You the Body You Want.

We know that sustained and substantial weight loss requires a great deal of commitment and hard work from our patients, and we will celebrate your success in your weight loss journey! However, we’ve learned over the years that losing weight alone is often not enough to give our patients the body that they’ve been craving.  Even after losing tens or even more than a hundred pounds, many people have excess skin and fat that creates unsightly bulges and unflattering silhouettes.  That is why Dr. Landis has honed his skills in body contouring procedures through years of performing these surgeries on his patients; he knows that the removal of this excess skin and fat can finally give you the shape you’ve been working so hard to obtain!

We are committed to always learning and striving for the best in patient care and outcomes standards. For more information on the many ways that Dr. Landis can help you become your best self in the coming year, contact us at 952.562.5940 today.

Looking for a New Year’s Resolution that You’ll Stick to in 2019?

The new year is here and resolutions are in full gear.  If your goals for 2019 include cosmetic enhancement, we are here for you! Plan ahead and call Dr. George Landis for a flawless new year with these procedures.

Every new year brings surprises and a few extra lines and wrinkles. Camouflaging them with powders, creams, and practical make-up techniques may have worked at one time but no longer. Sagging skin and drooping jowls can make even the best of us look tired and old. Reverse the signs of aging by tightening the skin and refreshing your facial features with a facelift.

Youthful contours of the face can be lost due to a variety of factors including, thinning of the skin, loss of facial fat, gravity, sun damage, smoking, stress, and heredity. Used alone or in conjunction with other procedures such as an eyebrow lift, eyelid surgery or even fat transfers or fillers to replace any lost fatty volume, a facelift can rejuvenate your entire face. This highly individualized procedure can be tailored to your specific needs and cosmetic goals.

Depending on the degree of changes you want to see, you may need either a traditional lift, mini-facelift or neck lift. The traditional facelift incision begins in the hairline at the temples and continues around the ear to the lower scalp. Fat can be sculpted or redistributed while the underlying tissue is repositioned, and the deeper layers of the muscles are also lifted. Once completed the skin is re-draped over the uplifted contours and the excess skin is trimmed away. If needed a second incision can be made under the chin to improve an aging neck.

The mini-lift is a modified version of the traditional lift. Shorter incisions are made at the temples and around the ear prior to any adjusting under the skin. Mini-lifts are usually reserved for patients that have a lesser degree of skin relaxation. While still improving the look, the mini is less rejuvenating than a full facelift.

Unsightly bulges are caused by stubborn fatty deposits unchanged by diet and exercise. These bulges can leave you feeling like a failure and disappointment. Thankfully, liposuction can help eliminate the source of your discomfort.

Because liposuction is not a weight loss treatment, the ideal candidate is someone who is at or near their desired weight. During the procedure, excess fat deposits are targeted for removal to improve body contours, helping to slim and reshape specific areas. This versatile procedure can be used either alone or in multiple areas of the body and in conjunction with other procedures such as a facelift or breast augmentation.

During the procedure, small inconspicuous incisions are made through which a small cannula can be inserted into the problem area. A solution is used to aid in loosening the fatty deposits while the cannula is moved back and forth in controlled movements to suction out the unwanted material. Once any swelling has subsided, your improved body contour will appear leaving you slimmer with a more defined tone sure to boost your self-esteem.

Breast Augmentation

Individuals who feel uncomfortable with their breast size or shape can find themselves lacking in confidence and often use clothing as a way to enhance what mother nature didn’t give them. Weight fluctuations and pregnancy can also impact your breasts causing a loss of volume.

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that uses implants to increase the size and shape of the breast. There are two main types of implants, silicone, and saline. Silicone gel implants tend to have a more natural feel but both types are safe for use. Each can be placed either on top of or beneath the muscle depending on your aesthetic needs. During the procedure, small incisions are made to allow for insertion. Any surgical scars are easily hidden within the natural contours of the body and generally fade over time.  After a short recovery period, the results of breast augmentation are immediately noticeable. You will enjoy your new curves and the confidence associated with looking and feeling your best for many years to come.

Look Great This Holiday Season with These Non-Surgical Treatments

With family reunions, holiday dinners and festive parties on the horizon, having the right outfit is just part of the equation to look your best this holiday season. Facial beauty and skin rejuvenation are also important for many preparing for the upcoming winter events.

When planning to look your best in the next few weeks, we suggest choosing a procedure which has quick results and will last well past the New Year. Board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. George Landis, offers multiple treatments which do just that.

One of the first visible signs of aging is the appearance of expression lines on the forehead and about the eyes. These blemishes are a result of constant movement of facial muscles as we smile, laugh, or squint. Botox is a purified version of botulinum toxin which blocks nerve activity in the muscle. This effect will soften facial wrinkles and fine lines and leave you with a smooth, youthful skin presence.

The procedure is quick and easy, and the results will last well past the New Year. There is no downtime with side-effects limited to some redness or swelling which subside in a few hours or a couple of days.

Although Botox is extremely popular, patients should be wary on who performs the procedure. With many fly-by-night “Botox Parties” available, too many injectors have little to no training and may put your results and health at risk. Dr. Landis is recognized as an Allergan Platinum Level Injector which ensures a safe treatment and optimal results.

Dermal Fillers

With age, your face may experience sagging skin, wrinkles, lines, hollows, and voids. To fight this process, Dr. Landis offers non-surgical, minimally invasive dermal fillers to resolve the effects of aging and restore a youthful, fresh appearance. This look will go with any outfit you choose to look fantastic at any holiday event.

Hyaluronic Acid Fillers

With a selection of popular fillers available, Dr. Landis can artistically control facial contours while diminishing the signs of aging. One type of filler which can provide amazing results are those made from non-animal, biodegradable, and stable hyaluronic acid. This component is a natural sugar found in the skin to support fullness and volume.

As we age, hyaluronic acid levels diminish slowly paving the way for the visible signs of aging becoming prominent. Hyaluronic acid fillers are beneficial skin treatments because they replenish this much needed natural element which attracts moisture and expands. This expansion promotes a plumping effect which raises folds, wrinkles, and lines from beneath the skin making them less visible. Results last from six months to two years.

Calcium Hydroxyapatite Fillers

This dermal filler uses bone shaped microspheres which suspend in a watery, loose gel. For many decades this component was used in the dental field before it became popular as a dermal filler. These fillers stimulate collagen within the skin adding structure and support, and allowing for the shaping and molding of facial contours to improve definition and enhance beauty.

This type of filler is a powerful treatment for lifting deep folds and frown lines, as well as diminishing acne scarring. It can also provide an improvement to nose, chin and jawline contours. As with the hyaluronic acid fillers, the calcium hydroxyapatite fillers are non-allergenic with a low risk of adverse reactions.
