Pairing Surgical Body Contouring Procedures: Which Go Together

When considering body contouring, there are multiple procedures which can work together to ensure you get the results you want. Whether you need help in the tummy, breasts, buttocks, or thighs, there is a solution for you, and at times more than one.

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. George Landis offers procedures designed to eliminate excess fat and skin for optimal results. For many patients, he can pair two or more together to help you achieve your aesthetic goals in one surgical session.  When he consults with patients about combining these surgical procedures, more times than not the most popular cosmetic surgery is part of the conversation.

This popular aesthetic procedure has been around for several decades and has proven to be a safe, effective solution for pesky fat bulges that seem resistant to diet and exercise. By surgical standards, it’s minimally invasive and has a short recovery. Removing excess fat is essential to eliminate unwanted fat cells and improve body outline. Pairing liposuction with other body contouring procedures is a popular way to enhance results. Dr. Landis often combines liposuction with breast surgery, a lower facelift, fat transfer, and tummy tuck, to name a few.

Mommy Makeover

By definition, a mommy makeover is a combination of body contouring procedures designed to restore pre-pregnancy outlines to mothers dealing with the after-effects of bearing children and breastfeeding. The operation deals mainly with the breast and belly areas but can also include the thighs, hips, and love handles.

Breast surgeries like breast augmentation, breast lift, or breast reduction are combined with a tummy tuck to rejuvenate a youthful figure and improve skin tone.

The Breasts

During the aging process, especially after bearing children, breasts may lose volume and elevation. Breast augmentation with implants will improve firmness, size, and shape. With a wide selection of breast implants to choose from, the patient may either restore the breasts she had before motherhood or attain the breasts she has wanted since puberty.

A breast lift does what its name implies; it rises breast elevation to their youthful perkiness. Combining breast augmentation with a breast lift will give the patient the best of both worlds; size and shape enhancements with that upward turn enjoyed when she was younger.

After Weight Loss

When a man or woman loses a massive amount of weight, they are on their way to a healthier life. Unfortunately, when losing a lot of weight, excess skin may cause a problem. Body contouring procedures are an effectual remedy to eliminate excess skin to improve the shape and comfort of the patient. By removing sagging skin, clothes fit better without irritation and discomfort, and the body looks sleeker, slimmer, and taut, effectively completing its transformation.

What 2018 Taught Us About Plastic Surgery

The first mentions of plastic surgery in human history date back thousands of years to Ancient Egypt and India, hundreds of years BC. Though it is thousands of years old, plastic surgery is a field in which growth and innovation are celebrated, and the best plastic surgeons never stop learning new techniques and procedures. Here is what we learned this past year about plastic surgery:

Seeking Out Highly-Qualified and Board-Certified Surgeons is Critical for Your Safety and Surgical Outcomes.

In 2018, we learned that the risk for death for gluteal fat grafting (also known as the Brazilian Butt Lift) was much higher than for other cosmetic surgeries.  The American Society of Plastic Surgeons released a warning about this procedure that revealed a death rate of about 1 in 3,000 patients. While cosmetic surgeries are considered to be relatively safe for healthy patients, there is some risk, and more for some procedures.

Because of the risk associated with this and other cosmetic surgeries, it is critical that you seek out a physician who is committed to patient safety and has a great deal of experience. Not all surgeons are created equal! Find a board-certified surgeon to do your surgery, as this ensures that he has completed a rigorous residency training program and has been able to demonstrate mastery of surgical techniques through extensive testing.  Physicians who are not board-certified have not demonstrated this level of mastery; why trust your beauty (and your life) to a lesser qualified surgeon?

Dr. Landis upholds the highest ethical and patient safety standards for all of his procedures, and he has decades of experience that will ensure you get the best care and outcomes for your plastic surgery.

Plastic Surgery isn’t Just for Women.

Though plastic surgery has traditionally been sought out by women who want to enhance their appearance, more and more men are turning to cosmetic surgeons for help in aesthetic enhancement and to boost their self-confidence. Just in the past year, the number of men seeking procedures such as male breast reduction, abdominoplasty, or liposuction has increased significantly. Dr. Landis has been performing plastic surgery on men for more than two decades, and he understands the physical and emotional factors at play for men.

Weight Loss Isn’t Enough to Give You the Body You Want.

We know that sustained and substantial weight loss requires a great deal of commitment and hard work from our patients, and we will celebrate your success in your weight loss journey! However, we’ve learned over the years that losing weight alone is often not enough to give our patients the body that they’ve been craving.  Even after losing tens or even more than a hundred pounds, many people have excess skin and fat that creates unsightly bulges and unflattering silhouettes.  That is why Dr. Landis has honed his skills in body contouring procedures through years of performing these surgeries on his patients; he knows that the removal of this excess skin and fat can finally give you the shape you’ve been working so hard to obtain!

We are committed to always learning and striving for the best in patient care and outcomes standards. For more information on the many ways that Dr. Landis can help you become your best self in the coming year, contact us at 952.562.5940 today.

Looking for a New Year’s Resolution that You’ll Stick to in 2019?

The new year is here and resolutions are in full gear.  If your goals for 2019 include cosmetic enhancement, we are here for you! Plan ahead and call Dr. George Landis for a flawless new year with these procedures.

Every new year brings surprises and a few extra lines and wrinkles. Camouflaging them with powders, creams, and practical make-up techniques may have worked at one time but no longer. Sagging skin and drooping jowls can make even the best of us look tired and old. Reverse the signs of aging by tightening the skin and refreshing your facial features with a facelift.

Youthful contours of the face can be lost due to a variety of factors including, thinning of the skin, loss of facial fat, gravity, sun damage, smoking, stress, and heredity. Used alone or in conjunction with other procedures such as an eyebrow lift, eyelid surgery or even fat transfers or fillers to replace any lost fatty volume, a facelift can rejuvenate your entire face. This highly individualized procedure can be tailored to your specific needs and cosmetic goals.

Depending on the degree of changes you want to see, you may need either a traditional lift, mini-facelift or neck lift. The traditional facelift incision begins in the hairline at the temples and continues around the ear to the lower scalp. Fat can be sculpted or redistributed while the underlying tissue is repositioned, and the deeper layers of the muscles are also lifted. Once completed the skin is re-draped over the uplifted contours and the excess skin is trimmed away. If needed a second incision can be made under the chin to improve an aging neck.

The mini-lift is a modified version of the traditional lift. Shorter incisions are made at the temples and around the ear prior to any adjusting under the skin. Mini-lifts are usually reserved for patients that have a lesser degree of skin relaxation. While still improving the look, the mini is less rejuvenating than a full facelift.

Unsightly bulges are caused by stubborn fatty deposits unchanged by diet and exercise. These bulges can leave you feeling like a failure and disappointment. Thankfully, liposuction can help eliminate the source of your discomfort.

Because liposuction is not a weight loss treatment, the ideal candidate is someone who is at or near their desired weight. During the procedure, excess fat deposits are targeted for removal to improve body contours, helping to slim and reshape specific areas. This versatile procedure can be used either alone or in multiple areas of the body and in conjunction with other procedures such as a facelift or breast augmentation.

During the procedure, small inconspicuous incisions are made through which a small cannula can be inserted into the problem area. A solution is used to aid in loosening the fatty deposits while the cannula is moved back and forth in controlled movements to suction out the unwanted material. Once any swelling has subsided, your improved body contour will appear leaving you slimmer with a more defined tone sure to boost your self-esteem.

Breast Augmentation

Individuals who feel uncomfortable with their breast size or shape can find themselves lacking in confidence and often use clothing as a way to enhance what mother nature didn’t give them. Weight fluctuations and pregnancy can also impact your breasts causing a loss of volume.

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that uses implants to increase the size and shape of the breast. There are two main types of implants, silicone, and saline. Silicone gel implants tend to have a more natural feel but both types are safe for use. Each can be placed either on top of or beneath the muscle depending on your aesthetic needs. During the procedure, small incisions are made to allow for insertion. Any surgical scars are easily hidden within the natural contours of the body and generally fade over time.  After a short recovery period, the results of breast augmentation are immediately noticeable. You will enjoy your new curves and the confidence associated with looking and feeling your best for many years to come.

Look & Feel Great: Medical Benefits of Tummy Tuck Surgery

When considering a tummy tuck, most patients look for the aesthetic outcome of a toned and taut abdomen. Because the procedure helps reverse the effects of weight fluctuation and pregnancy by supporting the underlying abdominal wall and removing unsightly sagging skin, we tend to think the procedure has only a cosmetic value. Although there are plenty of visible concerns resolved by the surgery, there are also medical benefits as well.

With the repositioning and repair of abdominal muscles, the aesthetic benefits make the procedure appealing. However, tummy tucks can also have medical benefits that many patients are not aware of. Here are a few:

Better Posture

An important cosmetic benefit of abdominoplasty is also a medical improvement as well. By strengthening the underlying abdominal muscles, it is easier for the core to support the rest of the body. The result is better posture which may help resolve medical issues like swayback and lordosis.

Reduction of Urinary Incontinence

This issue is common in mothers after bearing children. A tummy tuck helps correct urinary leakage due to SUI (Stress Urinary Incontinence) by creating a bladder obstruction with soft tissue near the pelvic area. This technique helps stop urinary incontinence patients experience when laughing, exercising, sneezing, or coughing.

This correction is a welcome benefit to many mothers who have had multiple pregnancies and need more than a tighter mid-section.

Hernia Relief

Although liposuction is a great procedure to eliminate stubborn abdominal fat, a tummy tuck corrects pressure on the skin and weakened abdominal muscles caused by a hernia. The patient can benefit from a safer and less expensive approach by combining abdominoplasty with hernia correction. Additionally, patients love that they only have to undergo one recovery period instead of two.

Stronger Core

Our core muscles are involved in everything we do; from breathing, sitting up and lifting objects of all weights. Because we use our core extensively, abdominal muscle repair will have a significant influence on our quality of life.

You will Feel Great

Mothers often deal with the consequence of damaged abdominal muscles and stretched skin. Although disciplined efforts of exercise and a wise nutritional plan can bring aesthetic and medical benefits, they often cannot achieve all the goals many women set for themselves and their body.

After a tummy tuck, many patients experience the joy of successfully correcting their abdominal contour as well as improving their health and wellbeing. With these results, many women find abdominoplasty not only helps them look great, but they feel great also.

How Pregnancy Changes Your Body

There’s a saying which says there are only two absolutes in life: death and taxes. Well, for women, here’s a third: pregnancy will change her body. Some changes are subtle with little to no visible changes while others are noticeable, and some changes affect some women more prominently than others. Here’s a fact: when a woman has a baby, her body changes.

With many of these changes, there are aesthetic resolutions which are achievable through plastic surgery. Here are a few changes which concern many mothers and the associated procedure to resolve each cosmetic concern.

Larger or Smaller Breasts

Your breasts may deflate and shrink after childbirth whether you breastfeed or not. Generally, they enlarge during pregnancy because of weight gain and the anticipation of providing milk, so they often change shape when they stop producing milk. Also, fat loss beneath the skin tissue will cause sagging breast tissue with many mothers.

Larger breasts appear with some mothers after pregnancy as well. There is no telling what a mother will end up with after having children—with about a third having larger breasts, a third with smaller breasts, and the other third remaining the same cup size.

Breast surgeries, including augmentation, a breast lift or a combination of the two, will improve the size, shape, elevation, and firmness of your breasts. Women who want to reduce their breast size may consider a breast reduction as well.

Excess Skin and Stretch Marks

Because a mother’s skin stretches in more ways she can imagine during pregnancy, excessive skin may remain after childbirth. Also, stretch marks may form, leaving unwanted blemishes, especially around the abdominal area. These post-pregnancy effects are different from one mother to another, with some having small amounts of loose tissue while others deal with much more.

Another problem in the abdominal area is its wall becomes so stretched, it fails to provide enough support, and the mother’s tummy will hang and sag.

Body contouring procedures, like a tummy tuck and a body lift, are designed to eliminate loose skin and leave the target areas taut and firm. With the elimination of skin, the procedure can eliminate stretch marks as well; however, patients should expect some scarring after surgery.

Persistent Fat Deposits

Pregnancy may leave the mother with stubborn fat deposits which seem to ignore diet and exercise. These fat pads are common on the hips, abdomen, upper arms, and inner thighs. For mothers who desire to be tone and firm and work hard to attain a tight body, this effect can be frustrating.

Liposuction is an ideal procedure to eliminate unwanted fat pads and give a woman the body she has worked hard to achieve. Once she is finished with having children and has attained her ideal body weight (or close to it), liposuction can be the finishing touch to have her clear the final hurdle of getting the body contour she desires.

Putting It All Together

Mothers who have multiple effects from pregnancy and breastfeeding may need more extensive work to achieve their pre-pregnancy body. A mommy makeover combines two or more body contouring procedures to help reverse the effects of bearing children and breastfeeding. A consultation with board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. George Landis will help you identify which procedure will work best for you.
